DP World London Gateway sets new annual record

DP World has set a new record at London Gateway, handling more than 3 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), in 2025.

This is a big increase from 2024, when the port handled 1.9 million TEU, growth of over 52%. London Gateway is on track to become the UK’s most important container port.

DP World’s Southampton terminal also grew, handling more than 2 million TEU. Together, the two UK ports moved over 5 million TEU out of a national market of just over 9 million.

At London Gateway, construction continues on two new all‑electric berths as part of a £1 billion investment. These will bring the total to six berths capable of receiving the world’s largest ships. A second rail terminal opened in 2025, and a new BOXBAY automated container system will be built over the next two years with a £170 million investment.

Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President – North Europe, DP World, said: “Every container that moves through our terminals at London Gateway and Southampton is moving goods that underpin British business and daily life, from food on our shelves to products keeping manufacturers and high streets running. Our UK infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping these supply chains running quickly and efficiently, especially during the busiest times of the year.

“Surpassing five million TEUs at our UK terminals demonstrates how investment in capacity, technology and resilience is allowing DP World to move goods more reliably, sustainably and efficiently from ship to shop, continuing to raise the standard for end‑to‑end logistics.”

DP World, based in Dubai, operates in more than 75 countries and handles over 9% of global container trade.
